Amplemarket vs Smartlead vs Instantly vs Clay: MCP comparison for Claude and ChatGPT (2026)

MCP lets AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT connect directly to your sales platform instead of just helping you write about it.

This guide compares how Amplemarket, Smartlead, Instantly, and Clay have each approached MCP: what tools each exposes, which AI clients they support, what you can actually do inside a conversation, and what is still missing.

Sales teams are now using Claude and ChatGPT every day for outbound.

Writing cold emails.
Drafting call scripts.
Researching accounts.
Building targeting strategies.

But every time you need real sales data: an actual prospect list, a live campaign stat, a contact's previous touchpoints; you leave the conversation.

You open your platform in another tab, search for what you need, copy it back, and start again.

The AI helps, but it does not have access to your pipeline.

That is what Model Context Protocol was built to fix.

And what this guide is for.

What is MCP (Model Context Protocol)?

Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in November 2024 that lets AI assistants connect securely to external tools and data sources.

Think of it as USB-C for AI: build one MCP server, and any compatible AI client can use it.

In December 2025, Anthropic donated MCP to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, co-founded with OpenAI and Block. It is now a vendor-neutral, community-governed standard adopted by Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Cursor, and every major AI development environment.

What is an MCP server for sales tools?

An MCP server for a sales platform is a bridge that exposes that platform's data and actions as tools that any MCP-compatible AI client can call.

When you connect your sales platform's MCP server to Claude or ChatGPT, your AI assistant can search for prospects, pull campaign stats, manage leads, check deliverability health, and execute actions.

All in plain language, without leaving the conversation.

What is the difference between an MCP server and a Claude connector?

You will see both terms in this comparison, and they refer to the same underlying technology with one practical difference.

A Claude connector is an MCP server that has been reviewed and listed in Anthropic's official connector directory at claude.com/connectors. Connectors use OAuth authentication, appear in Claude's settings under "Browse connectors," and work without any local setup.

Clay is in the directory, and while Amplemarket is not yet listed in the directory, its remote HTTPS server uses the same OAuth flow and is added via the "Add custom connector" field in under two minutes.

A custom MCP server is any MCP server you add by pasting a URL into Claude's "Add custom connector" field, or by editing a local configuration file. Smartlead and Instantly both work this way. They are still MCP servers under the hood, they just have not been submitted to Anthropic's curated directory.

The distinction matters for setup and cross-client compatibility. Directory connectors work across Claude.ai browser, Claude Desktop, and Claude mobile. Custom MCP servers added via URL also work in the browser on paid plans.

Servers requiring local configuration files only work in Claude Desktop. ChatGPT has its own separate connector system and does not recognise Claude's directory; cross-client compatibility depends entirely on how each vendor built their server.

How are sales MCP servers different from traditional integrations?

Traditional integrations (Zapier, webhooks, API connections) require you to pre-configure specific workflows.

MCP is fundamentally different: it gives your AI assistant a real-time, conversational interface to the tool.

The AI decides which tool to call, when to call it, and how to chain multiple calls together, based on what you ask. You are not configuring workflows in advance, instead, you are delegating tasks to an AI that can figure out the steps itself.

We evaluated each platform's MCP implementation across five dimensions:

  1. Tool count and breadth
  2. AI client support
  3. Setup experience
  4. What you can actually do inside a conversation
  5. Whether the integration is officially maintained or community-built.

Here is what we found.

The most capable sales MCP integration in 2026 is Amplemarket, the only one that connects a full-stack outbound platform, including live prospect data, buying signal intelligence, and lead list management, to Claude and ChatGPT through a single officially supported server with no-code setup and zero API key configuration.

Platform MCP reviews

Amplemarket MCP: the full outbound workflow inside Claude and ChatGPT

Official server: Yes
Setup:
No-code OAuth, added as custom connector
AI clients:
Claude (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise), ChatGPT (Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise), Cursor or any other AI client that supports MCP
Skills library:
36+ pre-built skills

Amplemarket launched its MCP integration in early 2026 as one of the first sales platforms to ship a production MCP server.

The setup takes under two minutes.

Go to Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector, paste https://mcp.amplemarket.com/mcp, and authenticate with your Amplemarket account via OAuth.

No API keys to copy, no JSON configuration file, no Node.js to install.

The server is remote, hosted by Amplemarket, and works in both Claude.ai in the browser and ChatGPT web, not just desktop apps.

Once connected, your AI assistant can search Amplemarket's 200M+ verified contact database, enrich contacts, check previous touchpoints across your team, add leads to lists, and view account-level context, all from inside the conversation.

The full list of available MCP tools includes search_people, search_companies, enrich_person, enrich_company, get_contacts, list_accounts, get_account, create_lead_list, add_leads_to_lead_list, list_lead_lists, ask_analytics, and reference data lookups for industries and job functions.

What you can actually do

In a live session with 100+ sales reps, Amplemarket walked through five workflows teams are running with the MCP integration today.

Here is what those workflows look like in practice:

1. Prospect search and list building

Describe your target in plain English and Amplemarket returns a qualified lead list from its live database. You can add results directly to a list for sequence enrollment, meaning the research and the action happen in the same conversation.

One of the most cited examples from that session is event preparation: "I'm heading to Austin next week. Find me design leads at early-stage startups in the area," run entirely from a smartphone via the Claude mobile app.

2. Pre-call research briefs

Ask Claude to pull a company profile, retrieve previous touchpoints logged in Amplemarket, and generate a call prep brief, all in under a minute.

Shani Wolf, a marketing consultant documented this in detail with real screenshots from her workflow: Claude returned a full briefing in under a minute:

  • Company profile
  • Contact details
  • Previous touchpoints
  • AI-generated discovery questions

Notably, the AI flagged that the prospect had both HubSpot and Salesforce installed, a common signal of integration friction that shaped the entire conversation.

Her recommended prompt always includes "check for previous touchpoints," preventing the scenario where an SDR cold-calls someone a colleague already engaged.

3. Analytics queries in natural language.

The ask_analytics tool lets Claude query your Amplemarket performance data conversationally:

"What's my team's reply rate across active sequences this month?"
"Which sequences have the highest meeting conversion?"

No dashboard navigation, no CSV export, just an answer in the conversation.

4. Org chart and account mapping.

Amplemarket's Skills Library includes an org chart builder that combines Amplemarket contact data with HubSpot CRM data to produce a visual, interactive account map rendered inline inside the Claude conversation.

It shows which contacts are in active sequences, which have replied, and which are uncontacted. A full account penetration view from a single prompt.

5. Lead sourcing agent.

Jonathan Molina, an Account Executive at Deel, documented building this kind of agent in detail, including the exact prompt structure and real MCP output from his Claude conversations.

His system runs a persona map across Amplemarket's database every morning, routes contacts to the right lead lists by product line, and surfaces a structured summary.

The whole workflow, which previously took him four hours of manual work, now runs in 90 seconds, with no code required.

The GTM Skills Library

Amplemarket's GTM Skills Library has published 36+ pre-built skills for Claude and ChatGPT across nine categories: account intelligence, prospecting, call prep, deliverability monitoring, pipeline management, signal monitoring, team coaching, and more.

Skills are one-click prompt templates that teach Claude how to complete specific workflows using Amplemarket's MCP tools.

A rep with no prompting experience can install a skill and immediately run structured workflows without writing a single prompt from scratch.

Credit cost and supported clients

Searching is free.

Enriching a contact costs 0.5 credits per request, the same rate as enriching through the Amplemarket app. Results are cached for 24 hours so repeated lookups don't consume additional credits.

MCP access is included in every Amplemarket subscription at no additional charge.

Supported clients: Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise (claude.ai browser, Claude Desktop, Claude mobile, Claude Code); ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise; Cursor; and any future MCP-compatible client.

Full setup documentation is in Amplemarket's knowledge base.

"I set up the MCP yesterday and built a Claude skill - share my congrats, thank yous, all of the amazement and joy with the product team - it's incredible and super impactful." - Kathy Smith

"Just took this [MCP], ran with it, iterated and turned it into a project. Now any AE can enter just the company name and it gives a sense check of where the deal is, pulls where the org chart and who they can thread and recommends next steps. Work in progress on my end, but very cool early results." - Nick Lurie

Smartlead MCP: 116+ tools for campaign management and deliverability diagnostics

Official server: Yes (SSE transport)
Setup:
Custom connector URL or Node.js + JSON config
AI clients:
Claude (browser and Desktop); ChatGPT not natively supported as of March 2026
Tool count:
116+

Smartlead launched an official MCP server with the highest tool count of any cold email platform: 116+ tools covering campaign management, account configuration, lead activity, analytics, warmup management, and webhook automation.

There are two ways to connect Smartlead to Claude.

The simpler route is via Claude.ai's custom connector field: paste Smartlead's SSE endpoint URL with your API key appended into Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector.

This works in the Claude.ai browser on paid plans and does not require Claude Desktop or Node.js. Smartlead's own setup guide documents this approach.

The more powerful route is via Claude Desktop: add a JSON block to your claude_desktop_config.json file and restart the app. This requires Node.js installed on your machine and takes around ten minutes for a technical user.

Smartlead is not in Claude's official connector directory and does not use OAuth. ChatGPT does not natively support this MCP integration as of March 2026, so Claude Desktop is the recommended client for ChatGPT users.

Smartlead has confirmed that a browser-native setup experience without Node.js is on the roadmap.

What you can actually do

1. Campaign analytics in real time.

Ask Claude to summarize campaign performance over the last 30 days, rank by reply rate, and identify which subject lines drove the best open rates.

Claude calls Smartlead's analytics tools at the moment of the query, retrieves current data, and returns a structured table with no dashboard navigation, no CSV export. The conversational layer means you can follow up in the same session: "Now show me only campaigns targeting VP Engineering roles" or "Compare this month to last month for the same campaigns."

2. Deliverability diagnostics.

Smartlead's SmartDelivery tools are exposed through the MCP server, so Claude can check warmup status, flag accounts with declining health scores, and monitor blacklist status before they compound into domain reputation damage.

This is one of Smartlead's strongest MCP use cases: deliverability problems are notoriously hard to catch in dashboards, but a natural language query returns actionable data immediately.

3. Lead management and campaign creation.

Add leads to campaigns, update statuses, retrieve reply data, manage lead categories, and create new campaigns with schedule settings, all via conversation.

Instantly MCP: a community bridge for campaign data access

Official server: Community-maintained
Setup: Custom connector URL or Python CLI
AI clients:
Claude (browser and Desktop), ChatGPT (Developer Mode)
Tool count:
38

Instantly launched its MCP server in early March 2026. The implementation is community-maintained, built on FastMCP, and exposes 38 tools covering core campaign management and lead operations.

There are two ways to connect it to Claude.

The simpler route is via Claude.ai's custom connector field: paste Instantly's MCP server URL with your API key into Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector.

This works in the Claude.ai browser on paid plans without any local setup. Instantly's own course documentation covers this step-by-step.

The alternative is running the server locally, which requires Python 3.10 or higher and command-line comfort. You install the package, configure your API key, and run the server. The local server must remain running for the connection to stay active.

For ChatGPT, MCP support is available through Developer Mode (introduced in September 2025) for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans.

What you can actually do

Instantly's 38 tools cover the core outbound loop: reading campaign statistics, managing leads, creating and updating campaigns, and basic inbox management.

The primary use case is analysis and hygiene: ask Claude to identify campaigns with below-average reply rates, flag leads who have not responded after five touchpoints, or review which email accounts have the highest bounce rates.

For teams using multiple tools in a Claude workflow (for example, Clay for enrichment and Instantly for sending), the MCP provides a way to query Instantly data inside the same conversation without switching tabs.

Key limitation: no deliverability depth

Instantly's MCP reflects what the platform itself offers at the deliverability layer: warmup and inbox rotation, but not domain health monitoring, SPF/DKIM/DMARC visibility, inbox placement testing, or AI mailbox selection.

Amplemarket's deliverability guide documents this gap across all platforms using a 21-point framework: Amplemarket scores 21 out of 21, Smartlead scores 8 out of 21, and Instantly covers only the warmup component.

Clay MCP: the full picture

Clay launched as an official connector in Claude's connector directory in January 2026.

It is available at claude.com/connectors/clay, uses OAuth authentication, and requires no local setup or API key configuration.

What the Clay connector does inside Claude: find contacts with verified emails and phone numbers, run account research, map buying committees, and draft personalized outreach.

For teams already working inside Clay and wanting to surface that data in a Claude conversation, it is a genuine integration.

Two important limitations make it materially different from Amplemarket's MCP, however.

First, Clay's connector is Claude-only. It does not work in ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code, or any other MCP-compatible client outside of Claude.

Second, Clay's connector is read-focused: you can query enriched data that Clay already holds in your workspace, but you cannot trigger Clay's enrichment waterfall or Claygent workflows from inside Claude.

Enrichment jobs still have to be run inside Clay's UI first. Independent testing confirms this: Clay "does not expose its enrichment workflows through the MCP. The MCP is read-focused: search contacts, pull details, check interaction history."

For teams looking for live, on-demand prospect search inside Claude, Amplemarket is still the only option in this comparison. Its search_people tool queries a 200M+ contact database in real time from inside the conversation, without any pre-enrichment step in a separate UI.

The practical question: which MCP gives your AI the most power?

The answer depends on what your AI needs to do.

If you want your AI assistant to access live prospect data, enrich contacts, do pre-call research, and build targeted lists without switching tabs, Amplemarket is the option.

It is the only platform in this comparison with a native B2B database accessible through MCP. Claude can search for and return verified prospect profiles in real time based on a plain English description.

The no-code setup and full support for Claude.ai browser, Claude mobile, and ChatGPT make it the most accessible implementation for non-technical reps.

If you are primarily using AI to analyze and manage existing Smartlead campaigns (diagnostics, performance monitoring, campaign configuration), Smartlead's 116+ tools are the most feature-complete cold email MCP implementation available.
The strongest option for agencies and technical operators running high-volume email at scale.

If you use Instantly as your sending platform and want to bring campaign data into Claude for analysis and lead management, Instantly's MCP covers the most common hygiene and analysis tasks, though setup requires a technical user.

If you were planning to use Clay as a real-time enrichment layer inside Claude, its connector is read-only against your existing workspace data.
It does not expose Clay's enrichment waterfall from inside a conversation. For live prospect search, Amplemarket remains the only option in this comparison.

Setup time comparison

Getting connected from Claude.ai takes meaningfully different amounts of effort across these platforms.

1. Amplemarket: Under two minutes. Add https://mcp.amplemarket.com/mcp to your AI client, authenticate via OAuth, and you are live.

No terminal, no configuration files, no developer tools required.
A non-technical SDR can set this up without IT involvement (full setup walkthrough here).

2. Smartlead: The quickest path is pasting the SSE endpoint URL into Claude's custom connector field: no Node.js required, works in the browser.
The more powerful path (Claude Desktop) requires a JSON config file edit and Node.js.

For a RevOps engineer: ten minutes either way.
For a non-technical rep: the URL method is manageable, but the Desktop method is a blocker.

3. Instantly: Similar to Smartlead: the URL method via Claude's custom connector field is the lowest-friction option.
The local Python server gives more control but requires command-line comfort and must stay running.

4. Clay: Under two minutes via OAuth in Claude's connector directory.
No API key required, but claude-only.

The AI client coverage gap

One detail that matters for teams choosing between these integrations: not all of these servers work across all AI clients.

Amplemarket's remote server works in Claude.ai in the browser, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, and the Claude mobile app.
Amplemarket has confirmed that reps have run searches from the Claude iOS app on a smartphone, meaning the integration is available on the go, not just at a configured desktop. It also works natively in ChatGPT.

Smartlead and Instantly work in Claude but require additional configuration for ChatGPT and are not confirmed for Claude mobile.

Clay's connector works in Claude only. It has no ChatGPT support and is not confirmed for Claude Code or Claude mobile.

For teams that need one integration to work across Claude, ChatGPT, and wherever else their workflow lives, Amplemarket is the only platform in this comparison with confirmed cross-client coverage.

What is coming next

Amplemarket's MCP roadmap includes sequence enrollment directly from Claude and ChatGPT as a near-term release.

When live, this completes the full outbound loop inside a single AI conversation: identify a buying signal via Duo Copilot, research a prospect, build a list, and enroll them in a personalized sequence, without opening Amplemarket in a separate tab.

Additional features on the confirmed roadmap based on webinar questions include call transcript analysis via MCP (building on Amplemarket's AI call insights), persona creation via natural language, and Duo feed lead prioritization.

Teams already using Amplemarket's Custom Signal API to pipe buying signals directly into Duo sequences, automating signal discovery, ICP qualification, and sequence generation, will be able to trigger those same workflows from inside a Claude conversation once sequence enrollment ships.

Smartlead has confirmed HTTPS transport and a browser-native Claude setup experience as upcoming improvements, which would remove the Node.js dependency entirely.

Instantly has signaled continued expansion of its 38-tool set, with more campaign management and automation capabilities in development.

Clay has signaled more developments are coming for its Claude connector, with an explicit focus on enterprise sales teams.

Bottom line

For sales teams that want to give Claude or ChatGPT real operational power over the full outbound workflow, Amplemarket's MCP is the clear leader.

It is the only integration with OAuth-authenticated setup, no API key handling, and confirmed coverage across Claude.ai browser, Claude Desktop, Claude mobile, and ChatGPT.

The only one backed by a live 200M+ contact database and buying signal intelligence your AI can query in real time, and the only one with a 36+ skill pre-built library that makes the integration immediately usable for non-technical reps without writing a single prompt.

"We have been testing different prospecting tools on the market, and Amplemarket was a clear winner after we carefully evaluated sales engagement tools including Apollo, Buzz.ai, Instantly, and Smartlead." — Irina S., Sales Operations Manager (G2, 2024)

For agencies and technical operators who want the deepest campaign management and deliverability diagnostic capabilities over an existing Smartlead account, Smartlead's 116+ tools represent the most comprehensive cold email MCP implementation available.

Instantly's MCP is a solid option for teams committed to Instantly who want basic campaign analysis and lead management inside Claude.

Clay's connector gives Claude access to enrichment data already in your Clay workspace, but does not replace a live prospect search layer. Teams looking to bring real-time GTM data into Claude conversations should use Amplemarket's native data layer alongside it, or instead of it.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, but with important limitations. Clay launched as an official connector in Claude's connector directory in January 2026. It uses OAuth authentication, requires no local setup, and lets you search contacts, run account research, and draft personalized outreach using data already in your Clay workspace. However, it is Claude-only: it does not work in ChatGPT, Cursor, or Claude Code. It is also read-focused: you cannot trigger Clay's enrichment waterfall or Claygent workflows from inside Claude. For live, on-demand prospect search from Claude, Amplemarket's MCP queries a 200M+ contact database in real time without any pre-enrichment step. Note: Clay.earth is a completely separate personal CRM product with its own MCP server and is not related to Clay.

As of April 2026, Amplemarket, Smartlead, and Instantly can all be used in Claude.ai in the browser on paid plans by adding them as custom connectors. Amplemarket is the only one that also works natively in ChatGPT and has confirmed Claude mobile support. Clay works in Claude via its connector directory but is Claude-only with no ChatGPT support.

With Amplemarket MCP connected, Claude can search Amplemarket's 200M+ contact database in plain English, enrich contacts, check previous outreach touchpoints, add leads to lists, pull account-level intelligence, and run natural language analytics queries against your team's outbound data. Sequence enrollment from Claude is on Amplemarket's confirmed near-term roadmap. Searching is free; enrichment costs 0.5 credits per request.

Smartlead's official MCP server exposes 116+ tools covering campaign management, lead operations, email account configuration, warmup management, deliverability diagnostics via SmartDelivery, analytics, and webhook management. This is the highest tool count of any cold email MCP implementation currently available.

For Amplemarket: Claude Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise; or ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, or Enterprise; plus an active Amplemarket subscription. MCP access is included in every Amplemarket plan at no additional charge. For Smartlead: a paid Claude plan plus a Smartlead account with API access. For Instantly: a paid Claude plan plus an Instantly account with API access. For Clay: any Claude plan plus an active Clay account.
